Cavan Town Holiday Homes

Cavan is the main town and administrative centre of County Cavan. Nestled between 2 drumlins Cavan town is a lively and busy destination located a 2 hour drive from both Dublin and Belfast and 3 hours from Galway. Cavan has many fine buildings, busy pubs, restaurants, nightclubs, cafes, shops, a leisure centre, cinema, County Cavan 18 hole golf course, Cavan Equestrian Centre and bowling alley.

Cavan Town is interesting because of its unusual layout. It was the only medieval town in Ireland founded by the Irish themselves, and its narrow streets still follow the same pattern that was set down seven centuries ago. Cavan town is rich in history and many buildings have survived for generations.

Among Cavan’s fine buildings are the Town Hall and the Roman Catholic cathedral. The Town Hall was built in 1909 and served as Cavan’s first movie house. The Cathedral of St Patrick and Feidhlim is the most dominant building in Cavan town.

Completed in 1942, with a 68m spire and flanking domes, the vast interior is styled like a basilica and extensive use is made of different colours of marble. The cathedral houses many fine examples of ecclesiastical art. Kilmore Cathedral with its famous Romanesque doorway is located 3 miles outside the town on the Killeshandra road.

The arts scene is vibrant in Cavan town with a variety of local music and cultural festivals throughout the course of the year. Both the County Cavan Drama Festival and the NYAH Arts Festival take place each year during March/April.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade draws large crowds to see the colour and creativity of the floats. Many heritage events take place throughout the town during Heritage Week in Aug/Sept of every year.

Situated on the N3 just minutes from Cavan town, the Cavan Crystal Tourist Shop offers the visitor comfy sofas to relax in, open fires and local/nationally produced crafts. The restaurant designed by Irish craftsmen boasts an array of home cooked food.

The audio-visual theatre gives visitors an insight into the craft of mouth-blown, hand-cut crystal and a brief history of Cavan and its environs.

Founded in 1894, County Cavan Golf Club sits about a mile north-west of the town, just off the Killeshandra Road. It’s an 18-hole parkland course and is very popular with visitors. A feature of the parkland course are the mature trees, some over 100 years old. The closing 6 holes are a challenge for all.
